TypeAraby & XLab

xLab is an anti-hierarchical, extra-disciplinary research and development entity creating design tools and artifacts that connect art, design, and the sciences through technology, computation, and craft. Its research examines the historical reduction of typographic form through mechanical processes and approaches to multilingual unification based on Latin script. TypeAraby is a hub for Arabic typography integrating pedagogy, discourse, and practice. Its work approaches design education and research through revisionism and decolonization, moving beyond linear accounts of progress or formal evolution in type design. It instead develops a philosophical conversation between form and meaning, embracing language and tradition as living sources of inspiration. Based within VCUarts Qatar’s Institute for Creative Research, xLab develops systems, machines, electronic artworks, typefaces, and fabrication tools that bring computation into dialogue with craft. Its projects include Machine Calligraphy and Language-as-Machine, extending research into writing through exhibitions, experimental technologies, and new approaches to creative practice.

«إكس لاب» جهة للبحث والتطوير تعمل خارج الحدود المعتادة للتخصصات، بعيداً عن التسلسل الهرمي في العمل. تبتكر أدوات تصميم وقطعاً فنية تجمع الفن والتصميم والعلوم عبر التقنية والحوسبة والحِرف. يتناول بحث «إكس لاب» أثر العمليات الميكانيكية في تبسيط أشكال الحروف واختزال تنوّعها، ومحاولات إخضاع أنظمة الكتابة المختلفة لمعايير مستمدّة من الحرف اللاتيني. أما «تايب عربي» فهو مركز للتصميم الطباعي العربي يجمع التعليم والنقاش والممارسة. يعيد النظر في الروايات التاريخية ويعمل على تفكيك أثر الاستعمار في تعليم التصميم والبحث فيه، ويتجاوز فكرة تطوّر تصميم الحروف في مسار واحد نحو التقدّم، ليقيم حواراً فلسفياً بين الشكل والمعنى، وينظر إلى اللغة والتقاليد بوصفهما مصدرين حيّين للإلهام. يعمل «إكس لاب» ضمن معهد البحوث الإبداعية بجامعة فرجينيا كومنولث للفنون في قطر، ويطوّر أنظمة وآلات وأعمالاً فنية إلكترونية وخطوطاً وأدوات تصنيع تجمع الحوسبة بالعمل الحِرفي. ومن مشاريعه «ماشين كاليغرافي» و«لانغويج آز ماشين»، حيث تُستكشف الكتابة من خلال المعارض والتقنيات التجريبية وأساليب جديدة في العمل الإبداعي.
