Tarek Wagih Hamdy, born in Cairo in 1967, is an architect and designer working in the city where he was born and trained. He creates hardwood cabinets, carved and assembled by hand, as unique pieces or editions of two. His practice explores the renewal of Arabic and Islamic design through architecture, interiors, furniture, and objects. He brings minimalist forms into dialogue with calligraphic ornament and the textures of materials. His cabinet designs revisit the vargueño, connecting its Iberian history with the traditions that shaped it. Alongside his practice, he writes on architectural theory at the intersection of Islamic thought and phenomenology. His essays have appeared in Environmental and Architectural Phenomenology, beginning with Mourning Zaha Hadid in 2016. His first book, Architecture of the Sky, examines al-iʾtimān, or stewardship, as a governing principle of building. A second volume, Architecture of the Earth, is in preparation.
