Selma Fejzullaj is an Albanian designer, illustrator, and researcher exploring how writing carries identity, memory, and spirituality. Raised in the Balkans, a region shaped by cultural exchange and shifting rule, she understands scripts as living records of heritage. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design and an MFA in Design from VCUarts Qatar. Her practice traces how Arabic letterforms change across cultures, media, and geographies, bringing together typography, illustration, and storytelling. As part of the TypeAraby research lab, she investigates visual systems, heritage, and writing traditions. Her project Secret of Script draws on Hurufism to explore the symbolic and mystical dimensions of the Arabic alphabet. Through illustrations, a card deck, and animation, letters transform into flowers, birds, and human figures. Her research interests also include metaphysical themes in religion and history, as well as data visualization, linking her work with script to broader questions of knowledge, interpretation, and cultural preservation.
سلمى فيزولاي مصمّمة وفنانة وباحثة ألبانية، تبحث في دور الكتابة في حفظ الذاكرة والتعبير عن الهوية والتجربة الروحية. نشأت في البلقان، حيث شكّل التبادل الثقافي وتعاقب السلطات تاريخ المنطقة، وتنظر إلى أنظمة الكتابة بوصفها سجلات حيّة للموروث. تحمل بكالوريوس الفنون الجميلة في التصميم الجرافيكي وماجستير الفنون الجميلة في التصميم من جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث للفنون في قطر. تتتبّع تحوّلات الحرف العربي عبر الثقافات والوسائط والأماكن، جامعةً بين التصميم الطباعي والرسم والسرد. وتبحث، ضمن مختبر «تايب عربي»، في الأنظمة البصرية والموروث وتقاليد الكتابة. يستلهم مشروعها « أسرار الحروف» المذهب الحروفي ليستكشف الأبعاد الرمزية والصوفية للأبجدية العربية؛ فتتحوّل الحروف إلى أزهار وطيور وأشكال بشرية عبر الرسوم ومجموعة بطاقات وأعمال التحريك. تشمل اهتماماتها أيضاً الأسئلة الميتافيزيقية في الدين والتاريخ، والتمثيل البصري للبيانات، وترتبط هذه الاهتمامات ببحثها في الكتابة وبأسئلة أوسع حول المعرفة وصون الموروث الثقافي.
