Sahar Afshar is a British Iranian partner and designer at Dogray. She holds a PhD in Printing History from Birmingham City University and serves on the Type Directors Club board in New York and the Beatrice Warde Scholarship. Her practice combines more than a decade of experience designing retail and custom typefaces with research into the technological, cultural, and political dimensions of typography and printing. She investigates how these dimensions converge across historical contexts. As Lead Instructor for Type West Online, she helps students expand their creative practice and develop their own typefaces. Her typefaces include Mazhik, an Arabic display design inspired by handwritten signs and Egyptian cinema posters, and Setar, developed with José Solé to combine Naskh calligraphy with a practical typographic system. These projects connect her historical interests with contemporary lettering, exploring how vernacular references, contrasting writing speeds, and calligraphic structures can inform new fonts.
