Mariem Abutaleb

Biography

Mariem Abutaleb, born in Egypt in 1997, holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the American University in Cairo. Her practice explores the expressive possibilities of Arabic script, allowing writing to move beyond legibility into rhythm, gesture, and abstract form. Working with black ink, she allows each piece to unfold through the making process, revealing itself to artist and viewer alike. Repetition never produces an identical result, and each form retains its distinct presence. As readability recedes, emotional resonance emerges through what remains unread. Freed from literal meaning, her works invite reflection through perception and feeling, remaining open to multiple interpretations. For Abutaleb, writing speaks differently when it no longer needs to be read. Her work has been presented internationally, including in Norway, New York, Minneapolis, Belgium, Berlin, Cyprus, Athens, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Beirut, Kuwait, and Egypt, connecting her exploration of script with audiences across different contexts.
