Hussein Shikha’s practice engages Iraqi folklore and Islamic visual culture through computational and textile media. Connecting pixel-based drawing with woven traditions, he approaches pixels and knots as related ways of knowing and making. His work moves through associations and traces of memory, using fragmentation and ambiguity to explore layered experiences of time. Pixelation functions as a visual and philosophical tool, echoing traditions of concealment in Islamic art. His practice spans experimental film, animation, textiles, and interactive installation, drawing on Eastern and non-Eastern perspectives to develop visual languages open to multiple interpretations. He holds a master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and an Advanced Master’s in Research in Art and Design from Sint Lucas Antwerp. His work has appeared at Nieuwe Instituut, BAK, KIOSK, and Kunsthal Extra City. In 2025, he received the POMONA Art Fund Grant from SOFAM and the King Baudouin Foundation.
ينطلق حسين شيخة من الموروث الشعبي العراقي والثقافة البصرية الإسلامية، ويستكشفهما من خلال الحوسبة والنسيج. يربط الرسم بالبكسل بتقاليد النسج، ويجد في البكسلات وعُقد النسيج وسيلتين مترابطتين للمعرفة والإبداع. تستحضر أعماله شذرات الذاكرة وتداعياتها، وتوظّف التجزئة والغموض لاستكشاف تداخل الأزمنة في التجربة الإنسانية. ويغدو إظهار البكسلات بوصفها وحدات بناء الصورة أداة بصرية وفلسفية تتجاوب مع تقاليد الحجب في الفن الإسلامي. تتنوّع أعماله بين الفيلم التجريبي والتحريك والنسيج والأعمال التركيبية التفاعلية، مستلهماً رؤى من الشرق وخارجه لبناء لغات بصرية تحتمل قراءات متعددة. يحمل ماجستير الفنون البصرية من الأكاديمية الملكية للفنون الجميلة في أنتويرب، وماجستير متقدّماً في البحث في الفن والتصميم من سينت لوكاس أنتويرب. عُرضت أعماله في نيوه إنستيتوت وباك وكيوسك وكونستهال إكسترا سيتي. وفي عام ٢٠٢٥، حصل على منحة صندوق بومونا للفنون من سوفام ومؤسسة الملك بودوان.
