Ali Asali is a graphic and type designer, university lecturer, and researcher based in Tehran, Iran. He founded StudioMetaphor in 2012 and established Frontline Typo Platform in 2018 to develop experimental Persian and Arabic type and lettering through practice and education. His research focuses on Persian type and calligraphy, and he is a PhD candidate in Art Studies at the Art University of Tehran. His teaching includes lectures and workshops that challenge conventional approaches to letterforms and legibility. At VCUarts Qatar, his experimental Curve of Noon typography workshop used game-like techniques to rethink how Arabic letters are read. Frontline Typo documents students’ work through bilingual yearbooks, including the Type Directors Club award-winning Farsi Alternative Type Design Yearbook 2022. He also served as art director and designer for the visual identity of Type Week 2025, connecting calligraphic structures with a modular system across print, motion graphics, exhibition signage, and typographic installation.
علي عسلي مصمّم جرافيك ومصمّم حروف ومحاضر جامعي وباحث يقيم في طهران، إيران. أسّس «ستوديو ميتافور» عام ٢٠١٢، وأطلق منصة «فرونت لاين تايبو» عام ٢٠١٨ لتطوير الحروف والكتابة التجريبية الفارسية والعربية من خلال الممارسة والتعليم. يتركّز بحثه على الحرف والخط الفارسيين، وهو مرشّح لنيل الدكتوراه في الدراسات الفنية من جامعة الفن في طهران. تشمل تجربته التدريسية محاضرات وورش عمل تتحدّى المقاربات المألوفة لأشكال الحروف ومقروئيتها. وفي جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث للفنون في قطر، وظّف في ورشته التجريبية «انحناءة النون» تقنيات مستوحاة من الألعاب لإعادة التفكير في طريقة قراءة الحروف العربية. وتوثّق «فرونت لاين تايبو» أعمال الطلاب في كتب سنوية ثنائية اللغة، من بينها «الكتاب السنوي لتصميم الحروف الفارسية البديلة ٢٠٢٢» الحائز على جائزة نادي مديري الحروف (TDC). كما تولّى الإدارة الفنية والتصميم للهوية البصرية لـ«أسبوع الحروف ٢٠٢٥»، رابطاً البنى الخطية بنظام وحداتي يمتدّ عبر المطبوعات والرسوم المتحركة ولافتات المعرض والتركيب الطباعي.
